Building and Growing a Professional Services Firm

Brazer Communications was brought on board to promote the capabilities and expertise of the intellectual property law firm’s young Silicon Valley office, which had almost no visibility in the media or business community.  The office specialized in technology but wanted to build its life sciences and corporate practice areas.

During the three years we worked with Fish, the communications program met several important objectives for the firm.  We developed and maintained an aggressive media relations campaign involving media training nine principals in their three primary practice areas, leading to previously unknown attorneys being quoted as experts in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Business Times, San Jose Mercury News, Austin Chronicle, Boston Globe, Silicon Valley Biz Ink, and numerous trade publications.

Tying into Congressional investigation into patent reform, we developed an op-ed bylined by one of the firm’s leading Silicon Valley attorneys on patent reform.  It was published with original art in the San Francisco Chronicle and subsequently distributed worldwide by a widely read blog, a news service and through important industry associations.  The op-ed featuring the firm’s viewpoints reached other law firms and in-house counsel, and Fish received numerous phone calls from potential clients from around the world.  The op-ed led to a significant placement for the firm in the Wall Street Journal, which was subsequently printed in regional daily papers.  The op-ed’s author also was invited to testify in Washington by Congressman Darrell Issa, who was leading patent reform efforts in the House of Representatives.

To gain more visibility for the life sciences practice, we found two ideal ground-floor sponsorship opportunities for the firm on the Peninsula and in San Francisco that would provide widespread visibility and allow them to rise above the clutter of competing firms.  New clients and business leads were garnered almost immediately after the sponsorships began.

Brazer Communications did a wonderful job in communicating the strengths of our firm and helped us earn positive coverage from top-tier media. They were also able to correct erroneous reporting in articles where the reporter neither obtained our input nor fact-checked, and were very successful in “setting the record straight.” Mara gets into detailed facts and nuances and has the respect of the major media outlets. She is an advisor I can count on.
